Hat Size Chart New Era: 59FIFTY and 39THIRTY Sizes

By Fitness Hats Editorial Team · Published

The short answer

Measure your head, find the number in New Era's own chart, and round up if you land between two sizes. New Era publishes a separate chart for each closure type: true fitted (59FIFTY and variants), stretch-fit (39THIRTY and variants) and adjustable. The values below are copied from the brand as published. This page is a reference, not a product write-up, and the hats have not been measured by Fitness Hats.

The brand's chart was checked when this draft was written. Charts can change, so confirm on the New Era sizing chart before you order.

Which unit New Era uses

New Era publishes both inches and centimeters. According to the New Era size guide, its charts use both, so either works for your measurement. The inch values are fractions, such as 22¾. If your tape only shows inches, use the inch column. If it shows centimeters, use the CM column. This page does not convert anything. Every value below is as the brand published it.

The sizing chart page also carries a warning: the CM size on labels may not match head circumference in centimeters. Match your measurement to the circumference column, not to a number printed on a cap.

Fitted caps: 59FIFTY and variants

New Era's sizing chart says the fitted chart applies to the 59FIFTY, Low Profile 59FIFTY, Split Panel 59FIFTY, 59FIFTY A-Frame and Retro Crown 59FIFTY.

| Cap size (New Era sizing chart) | Inches | Centimeters | |---|---|---| | 7 | 22 | 55.8 | | 7⅛ | 22⅜ | 56.8 | | 7¼ | 22¾ | 57.7 | | 7⅜ | 23⅛ | 58.7 | | 7½ | 23½ | 59.6 | | 7⅝ | 23⅞ | 60.6 | | 7¾ | 24¼ | 61.5 | | 7⅞ | 24⅝ | 62.5 | | 8 | 25 | 63.5 |

The fetched copy of that page starts at size 7. New Era's UK and EU fitted size guide also lists a 6 7/8 at 21 5/8 inches and 54.9 cm, and its adult table ends at size 8 with 25 inches and 63.5 cm. The values it shares with the US chart match.

The New Era size guide says true fitted caps have a closed back with no hardware and are sized to an exact head circumference in eighth-inch increments. There is no strap to take up slack, so the size you pick is the size you get.

Example: if a tape reads 22.5 inches, that sits between two rows of a chart. The brand's advice is to round up, so the larger of the two neighbouring sizes is the one to look at. The numbers in this example are made up for illustration.

Stretch-fit caps: 39THIRTY and variants

The same sizing chart covers the 39THIRTY, 39THIRTY M-Crown, 39THIRTY M-Crown A-Frame and 39THIRTY INFINITY. The labels are letters, and some circumferences fall under two labels.

| Inches (New Era sizing chart) | Centimeters | Label on the chart | |---|---|---| | 22⅜ | 56.8 | S/M | | 22¾ | 57.7 | S/M | | 23⅛ | 58.7 | S/M and M/L | | 23½ | 59.6 | M/L | | 23⅞ | 60.6 | M/L and L/XL | | 24¼ | 61.5 | L/XL | | 24⅝ | 62.5 | L/XL |

The New Era size guide describes stretch-fit caps as sitting between fitted and adjustable. They have a closed back and a patented stretch sweatband that offers some flexibility within each size. The chart does not say how far the band stretches.

Adjustable caps

The size guide lists the 9FIFTY Snapback, 9FORTY Strapback and 9TWENTY as adjustable, with a snap, strap or buckle. They come in S/M, M/L, L/XL or One Size Fits Most, working across a range of head sizes. The copy of the adjustable chart fetched for this draft was cut off, so no circumference range is given here. The sources also do not say how much any closure opens. Check the adjustable table on New Era's page for your exact silhouette.

How to measure

New Era's instructions agree on the main steps: use a flexible tape or a piece of string and a ruler, keep it level and untwisted, and make it snug but not tight where the sweatband will sit. They differ on placement:

  • The sizing chart page says about half an inch above your eyebrows and ears.
  • The size guide article says about 1 inch above your eyebrows in front and around the widest part of your head at the back.

Because the two pages differ, measure both ways and compare. The article also advises measuring twice and using the larger number, since tape tension and placement can shift a reading. Both pages say to round up when you fall between sizes. With string, wrap it the same way, mark where it overlaps, lay it flat against a ruler and read the length.

Women's and kids' caps

The size guide says women's caps are not scaled-down men's styles. It describes distinct cuts and a smaller visor than the men's equivalents. It also says kids' caps are organized by age tier rather than one universal size. The UK and EU guide has a separate kids' fitted table that begins at size 6 with 48.2 cm. Use that table, not the adult one, for a child.

What to check before ordering

  1. Measure your head twice and write down the larger reading.
  2. Match it to the circumference column of the right chart for your closure type.
  3. If you are between sizes, round up, as New Era recommends.
  4. For stretch-fit caps, some rows carry two labels on the sizing chart, at 58.7 cm and 60.6 cm. Read the product page to see which label is sold.
  5. Look at the product page for the silhouette name, since each has its own chart.

The sources do not say how any size feels on a real head, how it compares with other brands, or how a cap changes with wear. For your own number, use the hat size chart and calculator and the printable head measuring tape.
