33 charts from 18 brands, each copied from the brand's own site with the page we read and the date we checked it. 6 more charts are left out because they contradict themselves: '47 Franchise (fitted) ('47 lists XL as 60 to 61 cm but also as 23 3/4 to 24 1/2 in, and 24 1/2 in is about 62.2 cm, so its inch and cm columns disagree); Brooks Hats (Brooks lists L/XL as 21 to 23 in but 54 to 60 cm, and 23 in is 58.4 cm); New Era Women's 9TWENTY and Casual Classic (New Era's page pairs 21 1/4 to 23 7/8 in with 53.9 to 58.7 cm, but 23 7/8 in is 60.6 cm everywhere else on the same page); Pacific Headwear True fitted (Pacific's chart steps 3/8 in between most sizes, but lists 7 5/8 as 23 3/4 in and 7 3/4 as 24 1/2 in, so its inch and cm columns disagree there); Sprints Adult hats (one size) (Sprints gives 22.8 to 24.3 in and calls that hat size 6 1/4 to 7 7/8, but 22.8 in is about a 7 1/4 by the size convention); Under Armour Women's headwear (Under Armour's women's chart lists OSFM as 20 7/8 to 22 1/8 in but 53 to 58.7 cm, and 58.7 cm is 23 1/8 in). We also checked American Needle, Bandit Running, Gymshark, Janji, Mitchell & Ness, New Balance, Oakley, Puma, Tracksmith, Vuori; none publishes a head-size chart for its caps on its own site.

US hat sizes in inches and cm
The head columns are computed: US size times pi gives the head in inches (the convention). Brand columns are copied from each brand's chart. Every row has its own link, such as #7-1-4 for 7 1/4.

Letter sizes by brand
Stretch-fit and adjustable caps use letter sizes, and every brand draws them differently. Each range is the head the brand says the size fits.

Where a brand disagrees with itself
'47's fit-guide page shows a chart image that disagrees with the size guides on its product pages (for example, it puts the Franchise L at 58 cm only and XL at 59 to 60 cm). We use the product-page guides. See the '47 page.
Ciele product pages also give a nominal size per label (S/M 56.5 cm, M/L 58 cm, L/XL 60 cm) next to the head ranges used here. See the Ciele Athletics page.
Some Flexfit product pages give different size ranges than its sizing chart: the trucker mesh cap lists S/M as 6 3/4 to 7 1/8 and L/XL as 7 1/8 to 7 1/2, against 6 3/4 to 7 1/4 and 7 1/8 to 7 5/8 on the chart. We use the sizing chart. See the Flexfit page.
Headsweats gives single hat circumferences elsewhere (one size 57 cm on its size-chart page; Race Hat 56 cm and Supervisor 53 cm in its FAQ). Those describe the hat, not the heads it fits, so only the Large Running Hat range is used. See the Headsweats page.
Mammoth's size-chart page shows an older image giving 7 3/4 to 8 1/4, which disagrees with the size chart on its product pages (7 5/8 to 8 1/8 for regular caps). We use the product-page chart. See the Mammoth Headwear page.
Melin's Fit Guide page lists different ranges for some shapes (A-Game Classic 59 to 61.5 cm, Legend Classic 57 to 59 cm), and its FAQ gives hat circumferences (Small 56 cm, Classic 58 cm, XL 60 cm with the snap on all pegs). We use the size guide on its product pages. See the Melin page.

How to measure your head for a hat
Use a soft tape (a cloth tailor's tape, or a piece of string laid along a ruler). Start in the middle of your forehead, about half an inch (1.3 cm) above your eyebrows, run it just above your ears and around the fullest part of the back of your head. Keep it level and snug, read the number, then measure again. Enter that number above in centimeters or inches.
The full steps, with the diagram, are in how to measure your head for a hat. The printable head measuring tape has a bank-card check so you can trust its scale.
Between sizes, or the hat is too big
A fitted cap that is a little loose can be taken up with hat size reducer tape: a self-adhesive foam strip that sits behind the sweatband and fills the gap. It cannot make a cap bigger, so when you are between two sizes and the brand gives no advice, the larger size plus a strip of reducer tape is the safer buy. Adjustable and stretch-fit caps solve the same problem with their range, which is why the tables above list ranges for them.
A chart tells you the head a hat is made for, not how big a particular hat is inside. Two hats with the same label can differ. That is what our measurements are for.

Frequently asked questions
What size is a 7 1/4 hat in cm?
By the US convention (head diameter in inches), 7 1/4 is a 22.78 in or 57.9 cm head. Lamood Big Hats Size chart lists 7 1/4 for a 22 3/4 to 22 7/8 in, 57.8 to 58.1 cm head; New Era 59FIFTY fitted lists 7 1/4 for a 22 3/4 in, 57.7 cm head; Pacific Headwear True fitted lists 7 1/4 for a 22 3/4 in, 58 cm head; Richardson Fitted lists 7 1/4 for a 22 3/4 in, 58 cm head; Under Armour Hat size table lists 7 1/4 for a 22 3/4 in, 57.8 cm head.
What hat size is a 22 inch head?
A 22 inch head is 55.9 cm, which is US size 7 by the convention (22 divided by pi, to the nearest eighth). Brands round differently, so check the chart: King & Fifth The Jack (fitted): S (21 3/4 to 22 3/8 in, 55 to 56.9 cm); Lamood Big Hats Size chart: outside its chart; New Era 59FIFTY fitted lists 7 (22 in, 55.8 cm); Richardson Fitted lists 7 (22 in, 56 cm); Under Armour Hat size table lists 7 (22 in, 55.9 cm).
What size hat is a 23 inch head?
A 23 inch head is 58.4 cm, which is US size 7 3/8 by the convention (23 divided by pi, to the nearest eighth). Brands round differently, so check the chart: King & Fifth The Jack (fitted): M (22 1/2 to 23 1/8 in, 57 to 58.9 cm); Lamood Big Hats Size chart: 7 3/8 (23 to 23 1/4 in, 58.2 to 59.1 cm); New Era 59FIFTY fitted: between 7 1/4 (22 3/4 in, 57.7 cm) and 7 3/8 (23 1/8 in, 58.7 cm); New Era says to go up, so 7 3/8; Richardson Fitted: between 7 1/4 (22 3/4 in, 58 cm) and 7 3/8 (23 1/8 in, 59 cm); Richardson says to go up, so 7 3/8; Under Armour Hat size table: between 7 1/4 (22 3/4 in, 57.8 cm) and 7 3/8 (23 1/8 in, 58.7 cm), and the brand does not say which way to go.
What does S/M mean on a hat?
It depends on the brand. Across the 12 charts in the letter-size table that use S/M, it covers heads from 51.0 to 59.6 cm. Should I size up or down if I am between sizes?
Follow the brand when it says. New Era: "If you're between sizes, we recommend rounding up." Richardson: "If uncertain about the size or in between sizes, opt for the larger size to ensure a comfortable fit." The other charts give no advice, so the finder shows both neighboring sizes for them.
Is hat size the same in every brand?
No. US fitted sizes follow one convention (the head diameter in inches), but each brand rounds and labels its own chart, and letter sizes such as S/M or L/XL have no common standard at all. Use the brand’s own chart, which is what the tables on this page show.
